From Prototype to Retail: Producing Custom Game Cards

How board game and card game publishers move from playtest prototype to retail print run: files, proofs, components and packing.

From Prototype to Retail: Producing Custom Game Cards

Key takeaways

  • Playtest with a cheap prototype deck first — rules and card counts usually change before art is final.
  • A custom physical sample takes 5–7 days; mass production runs 15–20 days after written approval.
  • Boxes, inserts and tokens are produced in the same cycle, so freeze packaging before the press starts.

A game that plays well in prototype can still fail at retail if the printed components do not match the design intent. This is the production path we run with game publishers.

Step 1 — Lock the component list

Before artwork is finalised, confirm every component: card count and size, rulebook pages, tokens, insert tray and box type. Changing the box after printing starts is the most common cause of delay.

Step 2 — Prepare print-ready artwork

Supply CMYK files with 3mm bleed, outlines for all text, and a separate layer for foil or spot UV. Our prepress team checks bleed, colour profile and line weight before plating, so the printed result matches the digital file.

Step 3 — Physical proof

We produce a press proof on the final stock and finish. Samples take 5–7 days after artwork and specifications are confirmed. Approve colour, card feel and box structure at this stage.

Step 4 — Print and finishing

Mass production runs on our Heidelberg XL105 (4+1 with inline coater), followed by lamination, die-cutting and automatic sorting. Production takes 15–20 days after approval.

Step 5 — Packing for retail or fulfilment

Shrink-wrap, insert trays, barcodes, security seals and multi-language rulebooks are all handled in-house. We can pack to retail-ready or to distributor carton specifications.

Our standard MOQ is 500 decks. However, if your order is under 500 decks, our sales team will work with you to find the most cost-effective option — useful for first runs and playtest editions.
