Tarot Deck Production: Sizes, Gilding and Guidebooks

Key takeaways

  • 70 × 120 mm on 350gsm black core remains the tarot standard; changing size also changes the box and guidebook.
  • Gilded edges are pressed and cured before packing, so they are scheduled early rather than added at the end.
  • A 78-card deck with guidebook and rigid box is a packaging project as much as a print job.

Tarot decks are judged on feel and finish as much as artwork. Publishers usually specify three things first: size, stock and edge treatment.

Standard and custom sizes

The common tarot size is 70 × 120 mm; oracle decks often use 63 × 88 mm or 70 × 110 mm. Custom sizes are possible, but keep the finished deck comfortable to shuffle and check that the box and guidebook match the chosen format.

Stock and surface

300–350gsm art paper with matte or soft-touch lamination is the most popular combination. Black core is available for decks that need a firmer snap. Surface choice affects print depth: soft-touch mutes colours slightly, while gloss makes them pop.

Edge finishing

Gilded edges in gold, silver, black or a custom colour add a premium signal. Edge colouring requires an extra pass and slightly longer production time, so confirm it before the schedule is fixed.

Guidebooks and boxes

Perfect-bound, saddle-stitched and spiral guidebooks are all available, in any language. Box options include tuck boxes, magnetic rigid boxes with ribbon pulls, and two-piece rigid boxes with insert trays.

Our standard MOQ is 500 decks. However, if your order is under 500 decks, our sales team will work with you to find the most cost-effective option. Samples take 5–7 days; mass production 15–20 days after artwork and specifications are confirmed.
